Play 90 second soundbite of 'Sciensiology' @ 'CD quality'
Thankfully, Alternine stop short of total metal mayhem preferring instead to rock yer fuckin' sox off and screw around with yer head by simply rockin' hard and hitting all the sensitive spots without causing complete sensory annihilation!
The Alternine sound is a solid mass of angst driven guitar sitting atop a big thumpin' rhythm machine with female vocals vying for supremacy. Actually, for me, the vocals are mixed just too far back and I struggled to make out the words although I very much like the style and intonation of the voice. Yes, the vocals just struggle a little at times to break through the gigantic guitar chords, riffs and fills - the background instrumentation is pretty intense most of the time and well loaded with big dynamics and amplified drama. Anyway, Alternine blast out their very impressive songs, four of them here, with such force and conviction that they very nearly become all-invasive. Now there's nothing wrong with that at all - Alternine generally make it work for them and they certainly leave their trace on you afterwards! It is a big sound and I wouldn't want Alternine to change anything coz this is their signature sound and style. But, just a little more vocals in the mix next time please!
Alternine have impressed me with this untitled four track demo. Although they're not doing anything really new in rock terms, Alternine make such a massive musical 'noise' and they're so together and solid they're pretty hard to shut out. I suppose Alternine are a little similar to Evanescence; equally dark but maybe a little less subtle and a bit more aggressive. Hey, that sounds like a cool recipe to me - keep on rockin'!!
As a demo this is quite exceptional - Alternine leave the listener in no doubt about what they are or what they're capable of. For me, four tracks are not enough - I think a full-blown album would be pretty immense!! Hard rockin' stuff this from Alternine - superbly written and stunningly executed!
