just five chances to get the Russell picture but, I think I got it!! Quite obviously, Russell is massively gifted and an exceptional talent just waiting the chance to show exactly what she's capable of. This is a brilliant sampler and suggests that 'Pop Of Gold' will be an outstanding work and will indeed be the springboard she needs to take her to higher places!
Alice Russell blends soul with jazz and comes up with a really impressive, pretty funky concoction that doesn't sit comfortably within any single genre envelope. Alice Russell blends and bends genre, she's got a stylish delivery that allows you to see inside her beautifully varied musical mind. With songs that often sound complex but probably aren't, and her seemingly inherent, natural ability to bring words to life, Russell takes a musical journey that's adventurous as well as exciting; Russell toys with time signatures and stretches her vocal chords as she adds her individualistic nuances to songs that seem to stick two fingers up to compositional normality. Even her brilliant version of Gnarls Barckley's 'Crazy' is given the full Russell treatment as she stamps her authority hard and fast to take full ownership of the piece.
Russell proves that jazz based popular music can still be cool and commercial. She certainly makes the juices flow with her wonderfully vibrant and very unusual take on things. Alice Russell isn't yer usual 'pop' songstress, this lady's got pzazz as well as soul and she seems able to turn her 'hand' to almost anything and sound original and, it has to be said, bloody convincing - Alice Russell is a bit special methinks!! The tracks here are beautifully proportioned instrumentally which allows the Russell 'tones' to be fully heard and appreciated in all their glory.
I'm not sure how many tracks are gonna be on the full-blown album, suffice to say that in just five short but amazingly diverse tracks Alice Russell has nicely whetted my appetite here. Alice Russell puts maturity into popular music, she's got class and style and her music benefits from her ability to make you stop and listen. Her soulful voice and jazzy tendencies come together beautifully and suggest that the album is gonna be massive! Alice Russell brings new life and new energy to soulful jazz, she makes it commercial, she makes is distinctive, she makes it organic, she makes it work!! Judging by this sampler work, 'Pot Of Gold' by Alice Russell is gonna be something else altogether; it promises to be an authoritative work of special moods and sensual sounds - Alice Russell suggests here that she's ready to make a move and, hopefully, a move in the right direction.
