'Shuma' kicks off like a steam strain then gets itself blasted into space and time with a brilliantly tight groove that sits astride pop, rock and funk. Fresh sounding, vibrant, punchy and totally kick-ass, Alfonzo run rampant over pop normality and indie trite. Alfonzo show that you can still be original in today's fickle music market place!
According to their Myspace site, Alfonzo are a 'rock/blues/pop' band but I guess the description is limited to what words Myspace can offer - certainly Alfonzo do fall into all of those individual categories but there's so much more that's not even touched with those three little words; Alfonzo are different and Alfonzo rock - of that I'm absolutely sure! But, Alfonzo don't stop there as clearly demonstrated by 'Shuma' and it's 'b' side. the instrumental trip, 'What's Happening'. And hey, what's happening? This is great stuff, really cool, it rocks and it shocks - brilliant!!
So, big hearted Alfonzo can definitely come up with the goods; they rock, they funk, they boundary cross, but above all they're just really hot and cookin on high-speed gas; not even simmering, absolutely boiling and steaming!
'Shuma' by Alfonzo came as a shock, I just wasn't expecting what I heard. Now that I've cooled down I'm able to better assess what's goin' down; stunning musicianship, brilliant vocals, expansive songs - everything!! Quite exceptional this - watch out for Alfonzo, this band's all fired up and ready to go!!
