Play 90 second soundbite of 'Ether' @ 'CD quality'
Although generally a pretty heavy rocker of a work this EP is jam packed full of all kinds of moods and feels. Vocally, Stu is totally on top of his work; he's got a superbly wide ranging originality and uses it to its fullest!!
'Self Preservation' opens the set with a steady, mid-paced rockin' little bitch of a piece with Stu's vocals pounding out over the catchy rockin' riffs. 'Catch A Breath' does exactly what it says on the label - it's a beautifully put together slower number which brings a little respite from the hard-core opener. It has an unusual timing to the verse and drags the listener in then lets rip into the chorus. Things calm down with an orchestral bridge which then lets in raunchy guitars to end. This is a very clever piece and works very well. The title track, 'Ether', just kicks butt with its riffs and timing changes. It opens beautifully and then gently draws you into its heart which is full of great instrumental work. 'Debasing All' is Stu's version of Dave Draper's concept piece as released on 'The Quarter Sessions'. Metal laden voices power their way through the heavy riffs taking things to the limit. The closing piece, 'Hollow', is an atmospheric work which opens with acoustic guitar and 'wind' behind great vocals. It allows Stu's subtle vocal side to shine and it's a real grower!
'Ether' is impressive and adventurous and it leaves me wanting more!
