Play 90 second soundbite of 'Blueprints' @ 'CD quality'
Is 'Blueprints' retro? Well not really but there's definitely something goin' on that borders on retro!! Actually 'Blueprints' is getting uncomfortably close to being electro-rock. There's an awful lot goin' on behind the impressively delivered vocals - keys aplenty, metronomic percussion, studious bass and a few wailin' guitars and it all comes together to make one hell of an electric cacophony (in the nicest possible way!!). It's a big and impressive sound and that's for sure! 51 Breaks sound like a band not short of ideas and not afraid of mixing it up a bit. 'Blueprints' must have taken a bit of working out, it's sounds quite complex but has a well rounded and polished feel to it - it's certainly rocks along apace and the overall vibe is boldly chunky and electrically vibrant.
If I have one criticism it'd be that with all that background stuff going on the vocals get pretty close to being smothered. As it happens, 51 Breaks just get away with it but only just; 'Blueprints' sails damn close to the wind as far as instrumental separation is concerned. 51 Breaks certainly go for it big-style and take risks dynamically. However, turn this baby up, max it out and just feel that monster groove - it's quite impressive and very catchy.
'Blueprints' by 51 Breaks runs rampant over several popular genre; it absolutely rocks, of that there is no doubt and there's an electric energy running wild from within. At times a bit on the cluttered side but generally absolutely buzzin' with pop sensibility, 'Blueprints' could just make a difference for 51 Breaks.
