Play 90 second soundbite of 'I Am An Antagonist' @ 'CD quality'
A bit like New Order does Kraftwerk does Gary Numan does retro-electro-gizmo kinda thang, 1877 lay down percussive beats that hiss, snarl, ting and zing and bass notes that punch, kick and growl, all driving strident guitars that ebb and flow, weep and wail and coolly arranged electro machines that soar, throb and pulse. On top of that there's the lazy, drone of the well proportioned and wholly suited voices. End result - pretty damn cool, if somewhat morbid sounding, songs that drill themselves into your head and sit there festering until you press 'play' again and re-visit them.
1877 manage to make electro rock exciting as well and entertaining; their chaotic sounding approach gradually opens itself up to you if you dare to let it in in the first place, their blatant disregard for your sanity is rewarding and a little hypnotic - 1877 certainly nail the genre and stand pretty-much alone in their quest to make this modernistic musical form something a little more commercial whilst still retaining cult-edged bravery. Both tracks here are over five minutes long and allow 1877 to wander off into nightmarish soundscapes and expand the themes to extremes - good value, great stuff!!
'I Am An Antagonist' is accompanied here by another excellent offering in 'Narcolepsy' - the latter every bit as good and enjoyable as its bigger brother! What 1877 manage to do is build excitement into this, all too often predictable, experimental genre - 1877 make it real and make it happen!!
'I Am An Antagonist' by 1877 sends shivers down my backbone and makes the hairs on my arms stand up! 1877 prove that modern electro experimentation can be viable, entertaining and worthy. 1877 may not be to everyone's taste but if you're prepared to give 'em a chance and open up your mind you might just surprise yourself. An hey, here's a tip; play the fucker as loud as possible coz it's monstrous at max vol!! 'I Am An Antagonist' by 1877 raises the ante for similarly ilked bands; 1877 absolutely nail it here and I have to admit to being extremely impressed with 1877's brilliant work
